Memorial Weekend

Memorial Weekend was BUSY around here.  And it was HOT, HOT, HOT!  I didn't enjoy the heat quite as much as I was hoping but the kids did.  They swam as much as they could all weekend.  There was a breeze which helped a little.

I helped start a Personal Hygiene Pantry at my church for families in our school district who need some help.  Food assistance does not cover things like toilet paper, soap, shampoo, laundry detergent, toothpaste, etc. so we decided this is what one of our missions needed to be.  We have been stockpiling for three months and we have SO MUCH STUFF!  I am so excited by how many people have helped stock the pantry and contributed money or time couponing and buying the items.  Our first pantry give out was on Saturday of Memorial Weekend.  We advertised in the local paper and also sent flyers home with the students in the school.  We only got a few people to show up and we able to help some other families throughout the month so not bad.  Hopefully next time we can help more, as word spreads!

My oldest, Jacob, was in the Memorial Day parade with the Boy Scouts.  He went with Dad to work at our church's free will donation breakfast in the morning and then walked in the parade.  The girls had a great time getting candy at the parade and waving their flags (until I had to take them from them for using them to hit each other).

Jacob also had Court of Honor for Boy Scouts this week.  He didn't advance rank this time (he is currently First Class, but has to finish up the three merit badges he is working on and will advance two ranks to Life Scout) but is was his first Court of Honor serving as Assistant Senior Patrol Leader.  For those who don't know about Boy Scouts, the boys run in a hierarchy of sorts.  There is a Senior Patrol Leader who is voted on by the boys in the troop.  These are older boys who have been in the troop for awhile and show good leadership.  They say if they are interested in the position and then the boys vote for who they want to be their SPL for next 6 months.  The boys know they want to pick someone who is responsible and a good leader because the SPL is the one who runs each meeting and plans things for them to do.  The SPL then picks Assistants SPL to help him.  They are in charge if the SPL cannot be there.  The troop is also divided up into patrols.  Our troop has three patrols.  Each patrol then votes on a boy to serve as Patrol Leader and Assistant Patrol Leader.  So the SPL is the first in charge, then the ASPL, then Patrol Leaders and then Assistant Patrol Leaders.

We have also been potty training our littlest one, Jenni, which happened much sooner that I was expecting.  She asked the week before school was out to wear underwear, just out of the blue.  I put them on her, expecting accidents all dat but she didn't have one!  So, underwear it was every morning.  She got up right away asking to put them on.  I actually think she is pretty much potty trained, JUST LIKE THAT!  I can't believe it.  My other two were not so easy...they didn't want to sit on the potty, didn't want to take time to do it, got part of it down but not the other.  This girl was EASY!!!!!  She is doing so good too for only being potty trained for 2 weeks, only a few accidents.

Jessi doesn't know what to do with herself now that she doesn't have to go to preschool.  She is such a combination of her dad and me.  She has a hard time getting up in the morning, actually hates to get up in the morning, so much like Dan.  But she can't stop doing things, still wants to do school work, misses going to school and she has only been out for a week, just like her mom.  I am not used to sitting still, so I am trying to relax and enjoy not having to go anywhere but it is hard!  She starts a new preschool in the Fall because (1) she is not old enough to go to kindergarten due to her birthday falling after the cutoff and (2) I want her to experience school away from Mommy for a year before heading to kindergarten.  I can't believe how much she has grown this year.  I am stealing this idea from another friend of putting the beginning of the year pic and end of year pic next to each other in my blog :)

Have a good week!
